# Liquidation

> When Hyperliquid liquidates a perps position, how the liquidation price is computed, and how to see and move it first

Source: https://hypertake.net/docs/perps/liquidation · Last updated: 2026-10-17

**Liquidation is Hyperliquid closing your position because its margin has run out.** It happens when the mark price reaches your **liquidation price**: the point where your equity falls below the maintenance margin. Hypertake shows that price before you open, draws it on the chart, and lets you drag it to choose your risk.

> **Warning: Liquidation loses your margin**
> An isolated position loses the margin in it; a cross position can lose your available balance. Hypertake doesn't send near-liquidation alerts yet, so watch your positions or set a stop loss.

## What triggers it

Hyperliquid liquidates when "the account equity falls below the maintenance margin", judged on the **mark price**, not the last trade, so one odd fill can't set it off ([Hyperliquid: liquidations](https://hyperliquid.gitbook.io/hyperliquid-docs/trading/liquidations)). Maintenance margin is half the initial margin at the market's maximum leverage: 1.25% of the position's value on a 40× market.

- **Isolated:** only that position's margin and value count.
- **Cross:** your whole account counts. The account is liquidated when its value, including unrealised P&L, falls below the maintenance margin of all its cross positions.

## How far away it is

For an isolated position, the distance depends only on the leverage and the market's maximum. The higher the leverage, the smaller the move that liquidates you.

| Leverage | Liquidation price | Move that liquidates |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 2× | about 40,506 | −49.4% |
| 5× | about 64,810 | −19.0% |
| 10× | about 72,911 | −8.9% |
| 20× | about 76,962 | −3.8% |
| 40× | about 78,987 | −1.3% |

_An isolated BTC long opened at 80,000, BTC's maximum 40× (maintenance 1.25%), before fees. A short mirrors it upwards: at 10×, about 86,914 (+8.6%)._

Hypertake computes the estimate the same way Hyperliquid's documentation does. For isolated: `L = P × (1 − s × (1/leverage − m) ÷ (1 − m × s))`, where `P` is your entry, `s` is 1 for a long and −1 for a short, and `m` is the maintenance rate. For cross, your available balance enters too, so the liquidation moves with the size of the order. Once the position is open, Hypertake shows Hyperliquid's own liquidation price for it.

## See it before you confirm

_Illustration: A price line with two horizontal lines under it: the current liquidation at 73,228, faint, and the new one at 70,950 after adding $40 of margin, in amber, with an arrow from old to new._

- **Before you open:** on a market you don't hold, a dashed amber **Liquidation** line sits on the chart even before you type an amount. Its label says "drag to set the leverage" (isolated) or "drag to set your amount" (cross).
- **Drag it:** on an isolated order, dragging the line picks the leverage that liquidates there; on cross, the amount. A drag only changes the form: nothing is sent until you press the order button.
- **With a position open:** an order that adds to or reduces it shows Position, Entry and Liquidation as _from → to_ in the summary, and on the chart the old lines turn grey ("Liquidation now") while the new one is drawn with an arrow.
- **In the editor:** adding or removing margin, or changing leverage, moves the line before you press the button.
- **On the phone:** the order cover and the leverage sheet show the liquidation price live, and a liquidation within 10% of the price reads amber.

## What happens at liquidation

1. **Book liquidation** Hyperliquid sends market orders for the position to the order book. For positions above 100,000 USDC, only 20% goes to the book at first, followed by a 30-second cooldown (Hyperliquid's page has the details). If the book closes it while equity is still above maintenance, any collateral left stays with you.
2. **Backstop** If equity falls below two thirds of the maintenance margin without a book liquidation, Hyperliquid's liquidator vault takes the position over. An isolated position's margin goes with it; cross positions and margin aren't touched.
3. **Auto-deleveraging** A last resort on Hyperliquid's side when even the backstop can't absorb a loss. See [Hyperliquid: auto-deleveraging](https://hyperliquid.gitbook.io/hyperliquid-docs/trading/auto-deleveraging).

## How to move it further away

| Do this | Where | Effect |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Add margin | The position's **Margin** tab (isolated only) | Liquidation moves away; more money at risk |
| Lower the leverage | **Leverage** tab or the order form's slider | Isolated: adds margin first, liquidation moves away. Cross: ties up more balance; liquidation stays |
| Close part of it | **Close** tab | Less exposure; locks in that share of the P&L |
| Deposit more | **Deposit** (cross) | A bigger balance backs cross positions |
| Set a stop loss | **TP / SL** tab | Closes you at market before liquidation, at a loss you choose |

**Example: Owen adds margin to his 20× long**
- Owen holds an isolated 20× BTC long. The editor shows **Liquidation 73,228**.
- He opens **Margin**, chooses Add and types $40. Before he presses anything, the chart draws the new line: **70,950**.
- He presses **Add $40**. Hyperliquid moves the margin and the position's liquidation becomes 70,950.

Flow: Margin tab → type $40 → chart previews 73,228 → 70,950 → Add $40 → Hyperliquid updates the position

### Can a stop loss save me from liquidation?

Usually, if it's set short of the liquidation price. The order form warns about a stop loss past your liquidation ("you'd be liquidated first"), and the position editor won't save one. In a very fast market a stop loss can fill up to 10% beyond its trigger, so leave room. See [Take profit and stop loss](https://hypertake.net/docs/perps/take-profit-stop-loss.md).

### Why is my liquidation price different from the estimate?

Before you open, Hypertake estimates it from your entry, leverage and the market's maintenance rate. Fees, the actual fill price and, in cross, your other positions all shift it. Once open, the figure shown is Hyperliquid's.

### Do I get a warning before I'm liquidated?

Not from Hypertake yet: near-liquidation alerts aren't built. The phone shows the liquidation in amber when it's within 10% of the price.
