# Managing a position

> Close, add margin, change leverage or set TP/SL on an open Hyperliquid perps position, edited in place beside the chart

Source: https://hypertake.net/docs/perps/managing-a-position · Last updated: 2026-10-17

**Click an open position to edit it in place:** on desktop, the position editor replaces the order form beside the chart, with four tabs (**Close**, **Margin**, **Leverage**, **TP / SL**). Each change is drawn on the chart and summed up before you press, and nothing is sent until you do.

## Opening the editor

In **Positions** under the chart, click a perps row to open the editor on its **TP / SL** tab, or click one of three cells to open the matching tab: **Margin** (the amount and Cross or Isolated), **TP / SL** or **Close**. (The market name itself is a link to that market's terminal.) The row stays highlighted and tagged **Editing**, the head of the side panel reads **Editing position** with the position and how long ago it opened, and **×** or Escape takes you back to the order form, with whatever you'd typed there kept. On the phone and the Portfolio page, the same editor opens as a sheet or a modal.

The editor's top row shows the live position: **Size**, **P&L** (with ROE), **Entry** (with the mark) and **Liquidation** (with the margin), valued at the mark about once a second.

## The four tabs

| Tab | What it does | Shown before you press |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Close** | Closes a share of the position at market: slider 1–100%, or 25%, 50%, 75%, All | What it closes, the P&L it locks in, what stays open |
| **Margin** | Adds margin from your balance or removes some (isolated only) | Margin and liquidation, from → to, drawn on the chart |
| **Leverage** | Sets a new leverage, up to the market's maximum | What it frees or ties up, and the liquidation if it moves |
| **TP / SL** | Sets, moves or removes take profit and stop loss | Each level's price and P&L; draggable on the chart |

### Close

**Close at market** sends a reduce-only order at the best prices in the book, no worse than 5% from the mark. The button says exactly what will happen: **Close all · lock in +$14.29**. A partial close must be worth at least $10 ("At least $10 per close"). Closing all of it also cancels the position's take profit and stop loss.

### Margin

Isolated positions only; a cross position's margin is your shared balance. **Add** moves your liquidation further away; **Remove** frees money and brings it closer. Hyperliquid keeps at least the larger of the initial margin and 10% of the position's value, so the tab shows how much can come out, and hides Remove (with a line saying why) when nothing can. On a strict isolated market, Hyperliquid doesn't allow removing margin at all ([Hyperliquid: margining](https://hyperliquid.gitbook.io/hyperliquid-docs/trading/margining)).

### Leverage

Quick picks (2×, 5×, 10×, 20× and the maximum) or a slider. In cross, a change only frees or ties up balance; the liquidation stays. In isolated, lowering the leverage adds the margin it needs first ("Add $12.40 and set 5×"), which moves the liquidation away; raising it moves nothing. See [Leverage and margin](https://hypertake.net/docs/perps/leverage-and-margin.md).

### TP / SL

The levels already set fill the rows; change them by sliding, typing or dragging their lines on the chart, then **Save**. See [Take profit and stop loss](https://hypertake.net/docs/perps/take-profit-stop-loss.md).

## Adding to a position, or reducing it from the order form

The order form knows when you hold the market. An order on the same side shows **Adds to your BTC long**, with Position, Entry and Liquidation as _from → to_. An opposite order shows whether it **takes some off**, **closes** or **closes your long, opens a short**, with what you take or lock in. On the chart, the old entry and liquidation turn grey ("Entry now", "Liquidation now") and the new ones are drawn with arrows, before you click.

**Example: Leo closes half and locks in a profit**
- Leo is long 0.02 BTC from 80,000 at 5× isolated. BTC's mark is 82,000: he's up $40.
- He clicks **Close** on the row and picks **50%**. The tab shows Closes 0.01 BTC · $820, Locks in +$20.00, Stays open 0.01 BTC.
- He presses **Close 50% · lock in +$20.00**. The order fills at the best bids; $20 of profit, less fees, is realised.

Flow: Close tab → 50% → reduce-only order at market (within 5% of the mark) → 0.01 BTC closed, +$20 locked in

## On the phone

Tap a position to open its page: the P&L, then Size, Value, Entry, Mark, Liquidation, Margin, Funding so far (an estimate), TP, SL and when it opened, over a chart with its levels. The bar at the bottom has **Add / Reduce** (take profit and stop loss, add to it, reduce it, add or remove margin, change leverage) and **Close**, which opens with **All** chosen. Every close asks for two taps, like every order on the phone.
