# Take profit and stop loss

> How to set a take profit and stop loss on a Hyperliquid perps position with Hypertake, on the chart or by price

Source: https://hypertake.net/docs/perps/take-profit-stop-loss · Last updated: 2026-10-17

**A take profit closes your position when the price reaches a profit you choose; a stop loss closes it when it reaches the loss you're willing to take.** On Hypertake both are held by Hyperliquid as reduce-only market triggers: when the mark price reaches the level, the whole position closes at market, even with Hypertake closed.

## How they work on Hyperliquid

- **Triggered by the mark price**, not the last trade ([Hyperliquid: TP/SL](https://hyperliquid.gitbook.io/hyperliquid-docs/trading/take-profit-and-stop-loss-orders-tp-sl)).
- **They close at market** when triggered, filling no more than 10% past the trigger price. In a fast market, the fill can be worse than the level you set.
- **Reduce-only:** they can only close, never open a position or flip you to the other side.
- **Sized when saved:** each covers the position's size at the moment it's placed. If you add to the position later, check that its take profit and stop loss still cover it.
- **Off the book:** Hyperliquid holds them until they trigger; they don't rest in the order book.

## Set them on an open position (desktop)

1. **Open the editor** In **Positions**, click the position's **TP / SL** cell.
Result: The order form makes way for the position editor, headed **Editing position**, on its **TP / SL** tab.
2. **Turn one on** Switch on **Take profit**, **Stop loss** or both. Each row shows what it does: "Closes it when you're up" / "Caps how much you can lose".
3. **Choose the level** Slide to a share of your margin (take profit 5% to 300%, stop loss 5% to 90%), type a price, or drag the line on the chart.
Result: Each line shows its price and the profit or loss at it, such as "Take profit 84,000 · +$50.00".
4. **Save** Press **Save**. Hypertake places the new trigger first and only then cancels the old one, so the position is never left unguarded in between.
Result: Hypertake re-reads your orders from Hyperliquid; if the new trigger isn't there yet, it tells you to check Open orders.

The editor checks your levels before Save: a take profit must be on the profitable side of the mark, a stop loss on the other, and it won't save a stop loss past your liquidation ("you'd be liquidated first"). On the chart, a dragged take profit stays on its side of the mark and a dragged stop loss stays short of the liquidation.

**Example: Priya guards her BTC long**
- Priya is long 0.0125 BTC from 80,000 with $100 of margin at 10×. Her liquidation is about 72,911.
- Take profit at +50% of her margin: +$50, which is BTC at 80,000 + 50 ÷ 0.0125 = **84,000**.
- Stop loss at −25%: −$25, BTC at **78,000**, well short of the liquidation.
- If BTC drops to 78,000 (mark price), the stop loss closes the whole position at market, no worse than 70,200 (10% past the trigger).

Flow: Mark reaches 84,000 → take profit fires → closes 0.0125 BTC at market → about +$50 before fees

## On the phone

On a position's page, open take profit and stop loss to get a sheet with three ways to set each: **%** of your money, **$**, or **Price**, with presets and Hypertake's keypad for a custom value. Both start off; turning one on starts it at take profit 50% / stop loss 25%. A stop loss past your liquidation turns amber.

## With the order that opens a position

The desktop order form also has a **Take profit & stop loss** fold (its header shows **Off** or the levels set), with **Add both** to switch on take profit +50% and stop loss −25% of your money in one press. The phone's order cover has the same row. These are sent to Hyperliquid in one action with the order, and they guard the position only once the order has filled.

> **Note: Check after the fill**
> If Hyperliquid refuses either trigger, Hypertake says so ("Take profit or stop loss didn't go through") and the order itself still stands. Look at the position's TP / SL column after the fill, and set them there if they're missing: that's the path described above.

## Removing them

- **One of them:** switch it off in the TP / SL tab and press **Save** (the note says "Saving removes your take profit").
- **Closing in full with Close:** Hypertake cancels the position's take profit and stop loss with it.
- **Position gone another way** (liquidated, or closed from another interface): a leftover trigger moves to **Open orders**, where you can cancel it.

> **Warning: A stop loss isn't a guaranteed price**
> It fires as a market order. If the price gaps through your level, it fills at the book's prices, up to 10% past the trigger, and the loss can be larger than planned.

- [Liquidation](https://hypertake.net/docs/perps/liquidation.md): Keep your stop loss short of it.
